Sinuses are hollow spaces of air within the bones surrounding the nose. Sinusitis is a condition where these sinuses are infected and/or inflamed. They produce mucus which drains into the hollow spaces causing congestion and if swollen acute pain in the forehead, nose and under the eyes. There might even be mucus drainage in the back of the throat; this is termed as postnasal drip. One other symptom of sinusitis is that small portions of the face may get swollen and cause heaviness. Sinusitis can be acute lasting for four weeks or chronic lasting for much longer.
Acute sinusitis starts as a cold and turns into a bacterial infection. Anything from allergies to pollutants can cause this. Symptoms of sinusitis can include fever, weakness, fatigue cough, congestion and severe headaches. Antibiotics, decongestants, and other such stuff might help relieve the condition a bit. Using heated pads on the inflamed areas gives immediate relief for quite some time. Saline nasal sprays and vaporizers also help if only marginally in chronic cases.
